Food safety officials revealed that Distillers in China had added Viagra to thousands of alcohol bottles and said to their customers that the spirit bottles had “health-preserving qualities”. Investigators in the southern city of Liuzhou have sealed more than 5,300 bottles of alcohol. Sildenafil packets were also found by the investigators. Sildenafil is a white powder known as the anti-impotence drug Viagra. The two distillers are now being investigated by the Police in the Guangxi region.

According to the Liuzhou Food and Drug Administration, the powder was added to three different types of 'baijiu'. The most popular drink in China, 'baijiu'  is a strong clear spirit. Officials said that the haul is worth 700,000 yuan (£72,000; $113,000).

What is Viagra?

Viagra is used to treat erectile dysfunction or impotence in men. It works by relaxing muscles and increasing blood flow to certain body parts. Doctors prescribe only one dose of Viagra a day for adults upon requirement. And a lower dose is prescribed for those more than 65 years of age.

China’s extensive food safety problems

Extensive food safety problems continue in China, as police in cities across China seized over 100,000 tonnes of smuggled meat in June. Some of the meat was over 40 years old. Additionally, the nation was annoyed by 2008 tainted milk, which affected around 300,000 people and killed at least six babies after consuming the milk contaminated with melamine.
