Douglas Engelbart, the Internet pioneer who gave the world it's first mouse on wheels, died of renal failure at his California home on Tuesday night. He was 88.

The tech visionary, who invented the computer mouse and has won  half-million dollar 1997 Lemelson-MIT prize, was suffering from Alzheimer's disease.

Talking about his death, Curtis R. Carlson, the CEO of SRI International (the place where Engelbart worked), said: “We will miss his genius, warmth and charm. Doug’s legacy is immense. Anyone in the world who uses a mouse or enjoys the productive benefits of a personal computer is indebted to him.”

Engelbart is survived by wife, Karen O’Leary Engelbart, his four kids - Christina, Diana, Greda and Norman and nine grandchildren.
