Jessica Chastain and Kristen Wiig are likely to star in in Ridley Scott's The Martian. The two actresses are in early stage of talks to join the project in female lead roles.

If things work out then Jessica and Kristen will star opposite Matt Damon.

The story centres on the character of Matt Damon, who is an astronaut stranded on Mars. The man struggles to survive on the Martian colony, while NASA tries to send for a rescue mission from earth.

Ridley Scott' will direct the Fox film. Drew Goddard has written the script for the project.

The movie is being produced by Scott, along with Simon Kinberg and Aditya Sood. The film is an adaptation of a book by Andy Weir, published by Amazon in 2012.

Chastain's upcoming projects includs 'The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Them', 'Interstellar' and 'A Most Violent Year'.

Wiig's upcoming movies include 'The Secret Life of Walter Mitty', 'How to Train Your Dragon 2' and 'The Skeleton Twins'.
