Common medications used for gout treatment may also diminish the chances of having a heart attack or stroke, as suggested by a significant new study with over 100,000 patients involved. Scientists from the University of Nottingham discovered that individuals with gout who took urate-lowering medications at the appropriate dosage experienced a nine percent decline in severe heart-related incidents over five years when compared to those receiving less effective treatment. Gout is the most widespread type of inflammatory arthritis, impacting almost ten million individuals in the United States and millions more globally. It happens due to an accumulation of uric acid in the bloodstream, which forms sharp crystals around joints, causing painful episodes. Elevated uric acid levels can also result in kidney stones. The research concentrated on patients who had just begun using urate-lowering treatments, with allopurinol being used in more than 99 percent of the cases. Scientists assessed patients whose uric acid levels dropped below the suggested limit of 6 mg/dL within the first year versus those who did not achieve this level.
"Individuals with gout face a higher likelihood of developing heart disease and stroke. This is the first research indicating that medications like allopurinol, intended for gout treatment, can lower the risk of heart attacks and strokes when given at the correct dosage. The proper amount varies from one person to another and is needed to bring blood urate levels below 360 micromoles per liter (6 mg/dL)," stated Professor Abhishek from the School of Medicine. The findings revealed that the lower the uric acid we have, the more advantages gained, not only in decreasing gout attacks but also in safeguarding against heart issues. Those who already had a higher risk of heart disease seemed to receive the most protection. Researchers think this connection might be related to the severe inflammation that occurs during gout attacks, rather than just uric acid levels by themselves. Nonetheless, they emphasized that the study does not prove a direct causal relationship, and additional studies are necessary. Lead researcher Professor Abhishek mentioned that the results underline the importance of making sure patients get the right dosage to meet treatment goals. The results were published in JAMA Internal Medicine.
