Manipur Violence: Internet Shutdown Continues

The violence continues in Manipur. The ethnic clashes between Meiteis and Kukis communities still continue and the internet ban is to continue till June 9th. The violence started on May 3rd, where 98 deaths were been registered and 300 were injured. For a month now, the protest still continues in the state. Many mobs are still attacking the common public.

There was a fatal incident registered even on Sunday evening. A mob attacked an ambulance in Imphal’s Iroisemba area. The ambulance was ferrying people to a village, Phayeng. According to local police, the ambulance was completely burnt and police were unable to tell how many were dead. Only after bones were recovered, they can tell how many were dead. Police also not clear how many people attacked. No arrests were made so far.

To get rid of provoking statements or videos through the internet and to maintain law and order in the state, the Manipur government suspended the internet on May 5th and the ban still continues. There was huge violence out broke on May 3 to May 11 in 16 districts of Manipur. The central government has appointed a three-number committee headed by the former chief justice of Gauhati High Court Ajai Lamba to investigate the Manipur violence. Administrative Services Officer Himanshu Shekar Das and retired Indian police service officer Aloka Prabhakar are working along with Lamba.
