The horrific nature of the crime ‘Pollachi Sex Scandal’ in the past few days is doing rounds and you might be still unaware of it since the crime, which came to light in February, hasn’t been widely reported outside the state of Tamil Nadu.

The crime was first reported earlier this month after a college student approached the police filing a case against four men accusing them of sexual assault and extortion using the rape video they had recorded.

In her complaint, the woman had alleged that the men had invited her in the pretext of a meeting on February 12 and sexually assaulted her in a car.

Based on her complaint four men, identified as Sabarirajan, Vasanthakumar, Sathish, and Thirunavukkarasu were arrested by the cops within two weeks.

The cops had no clue on the enormity of the crime until they stumbled upon the mobile phones of the rapists, which had videos of more than 40 women in the age group 18-35 including working women and college students.

According to the police, the gang had been sexually assaulting women since 2013 and used the videos to extort money and demand sexual favors. Victims didn’t come forward in the fear of disgrace. Despite the case now surfacing, there is only one case against them, filed by the 19-year-old student.

The gang allegedly used social media to prey on young women, by befriending them and winning over their trust after which they would invite the unsuspecting victims for dinners, long drives, and meetings where they sexually assaulted the women and filmed the act.

The four men arrested men have been booked under the state's Goondas Act. There are reports that one of the accused, Thirunavukarasu has revealed that there are at least eight men involved in the gang.

The case has also taken a political turn in the state ahead of the general elections after it came to light that A Nagaraj, a local leader of the ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam was involved in threatening the brother of the complainant after he confronted the rapist.

The AIADMK has distanced itself from Nagaraj and said he has been expelled from the party.

Police too have come under fire in the case after the investigators revealed the identity of the complainant, which is a violation of the law.

“The name of the survivor, in this case, was revealed only to silence the other women and prevent them from coming out in the open and complaining,” DMK leader Kanimozhi alleged.
