The 2002 Gujarat carnage has come to haunt BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi all over again. The politics of hate played by Modi then helped him to secure another term as chief minister. But now when he aspires to be India's prime minister and is close to the hot seat, the past keeps reminding Modi of his incompetence in dealing with one incident as the CM in 2002.

On Wednesday, as the poll battle intensified, the Congress called the BJP leader impotent, for failing to prevent the 2002 Gujarat carnage when more than 1200 people were killed.

Union external affairs minister Salman Khurshid called Modi impotent for failing to perform his responsibility. The Gujarat CM was incompetent to stop the violence presided over by his own minister, Maya Kodnani, Khurshid added.

Khurshid further added that BJP's prime ministerial candidate was unable to stop a mob from killing Ehsan Jafri, an MP at the time of his death.

The Congress leader termed his anti-Modi rhetoric as a politics of incompetence, calling it a politics of impotence. Kurshid said that he is not saying Modi is responsible for the riots. However, the strong person who aspires to be India's PM was unable to stop his own minister, said Khurshid.

The 2002 Gujarat carnage saw the massacre of over 1200 people, mostly Muslims, following the death of 60 Hindu pilgrims who were returning from Ayodhya. The train they were travelling was allegedly set on fire and the pilgrims were burnt alive near Godhra. Since then Narendra Modi has received widespread criticism for not preventing the anti-Muslim violence post Godhra.
