India government has made its disapproval known to the US government by questioning its motive behind terming Sangeeta Richard, diplomat Devyani Khobragade's maid, to be a victim of trafficking, which could imply that New Delhi has a hand in the case. The Indian diplomat has been charged by US of visa fraud and underpaying her domestic help.

The government of India has conveyed to the US that the manner in which Sangeeta Richard's family was evacuated from the country just a day before Khobragade's arrest on December 12 using T visas - meant for the family members of a trafficked victim - and purchasing their air tickets confirms the doubtful motives of the US government.

New Delhi has stated that US claims of Richard being a human trafficking victim has no grounds for support. Khobragade's maid servant went to the US based upon a visa, granted on a note from the external affairs ministry, and an official passport. India is of the opinion that according to the United Nation's definition of trafficking, Sangeeta Richard is not a victim of human trafficking as the maid went to the US on an official passport after signing a contract for employment voluntarily.
