Congress chief Sonia Gandhi has been asked by a US federal court to reply to a Sikh body's charges relating to the1984 anti Sikh riots by January 2. The Sikh body has charged Sonia for allegedly shielding and protecting party leaders involved in the November 1984 violence.

On December 4, Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) filed a complaint against Sonia that she had been protecting leaders of her party involved in the anti Sikh riots by promoting and giving them party tickets. In the 38-page complaint SFJ has called for a jury trial of the Congress president alleging her omissions and acts to be malicious and deliberate, which calls for punitive measures.

SFJ has claimed that summons of the court were served on Sonia on September 9 through the staff of New York's Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Centre. However Sonia Gandhi's attorneys had challenged the sufficiency of the service of process.
