Top microblogging platform Twitter deferred with the new IT rules that the Indian government is keen to implement for all the social media platforms. The Parliamentary Standing Committee for Information and Technology issued summons for Twitter and the social media giant was asked to attend before the panel on June 18th. Twitter now lost its Intermediary platform in India as it did not comply with the new IT rules in the country. Twitter is the only social media platform that did not agree to the issues of the new law by the Centre. The new laws are introduced by the Indian government in February. The Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology said that Twitter received the last notice recently.

As per the new laws, social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter should appoint three officers who will have to co-operate with the law enforcement agencies in the country as per the issued new regulations. These officers should be available round the clock to respond to the demands and issues. All these officers should hail from India and their details should be published on the official website of the social media platform. The maximum Turn Around Time (TAT) for any request should be 24 hours and the complaint should be disposed in 15 days. All the social media platforms are asked to identify the content related to child abuse or rape. All the social media giants will have to publish a monthly compliance report about the actions taken on the issues.

Twitter has 17.5 million users in India and the microblogging platform earned close to 560 million rupees which is 7 million USD in 2019.
