World number 2, Maria Sharapova was beaten by fellow Russian Daria Gavrilova. The 27 year old Sharapova lost by 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 in the hands of 21-year old wildcard entrant Daria Gavrilova.

The shocking result was never expected by any one. The outcome of the match, where Sharapova was behind Gavrilova in all sets, is un-digestible for many. Fourth seed Caroline Wozniacki secured a comfortable victory on American Madison Brengle in less than an hour with 6-0 6-1.

In the men's tournament, Canada's Vasek Pospisil beat the Argentinian Juan Martin Del Potro with 6-4 7-6 (9-7).
