Hockey: Indian women claim bronze, Auckland

Indian Women Hockey seems to be going places; the team got rejuvenated in the otherwise dull match but was in the end out classed by the US.

Indian Women hockey team just managed to claim the bronze medal at the Harbour Hockey Stadium in the first leg of the four-nation tournament in Auckland on Monday. They were defeated by the US who equally played a dull game but managed a golden goal in the play off and went on to win 1-2. Tied 1-1 at the hooter the penalty corner made the difference in the 73rd minute. A direct shot by Shannon hit Joydeep's foot and umpire gave penalty stroke which was converted by the US captain, Lauren Crandall.

In the final match, New Zealand beat Australia by 3-2 to win the tournament. The second leg of the four nation tournament will be played at Lloyd Elsmore hockey stadium in Pakuranga, New Zealand from April 18- 22. India will take on the US April 18 followed by Australia and New Zealand. (With inputs from internet: AarKay)
