The seventh edition of the Indian Premiere League (IPL) might be about four months away, but the excitement is starting to build up with the auction dates advanced by 10 days.

Initially, February 12 was decided as the day when the players would go under the hammer. However, the date has now been advanced by 10 days and the auction will now take place on February 2, 2014.

That is because the franchises insisted that an early auction would help them promote players bought, and help them set a bond between the new players on board and the team's older fan base.

To heighten the auction excitement, the Governing Council of the IPL has announced a retention policy for auctioSeventh IPL that will give each team owners 'trump cars' to help them retain any of their three key players.

While it was previously known that the franchises would be allowed to keep five players from their existing roster, not too many knew about the number of trump cards they could avail - a new concept - they would be allowed to use in next year's auction.

For those who don't know, a trump card can be used by a franchise to buy back a player they hadn't retained at the start of the auction.

For example, 'if Mumbai Indians release Harbhajan Singh and he is picked up by another franchise for Rs X, Mumbai can match the same amount and buy him back with the help of the trump card. A team can do this for three players.'
