Government is planning to set up a panel to promote organ donation and encourage those who donate their organs. Major roadblock to the organ transplant program is the lack of coordination. An inter-ministerial committee will soon be set up by the Health ministry to promote the organ transplant program besides resolving the issues related to coordination. In a move to encourage organ donation in India, a program may also be launched by the ministry to ‘recognize and honor’ families of those who donate their organs.

On Tuesday, a meeting of senior health ministry officials with stakeholders who are majorly doctors and experts from government and private hospitals as well took place. At the meet chaired by B P Sharma, health secretary, the directions came out. By making National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO) a registered society, more autonomy is expected to be given to it. Other government plans towards the cause include strengthening infrastructure at both state and regional level.

Involvement of media in organ donation program

In order to intensify information dissemination program, the ministry also plans to involve all forms of media to carry out message and awareness on organ transplantation program. The Ministry believes that information can be passed in a sensitive and effective manner through the media.

Very low rate of cadaveric transplants as opposed to organs transplant from a live donor was noted, while most of the cases were eye transplants and other organ transplants were negligible.
