If you wish to protect yourself against asthma, try and load up on plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables.

Researchers claim that those who eat fiber rich diet have less inflamed lungs when exposed to the house dust mites (an allergen) than those who ate little of the healthy food.

Their findings underline that what we eat eventually influence our immune cell development and disease outside of the gut.

A previous study had revealed that both asthma and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) are caused by the same inflammatory reaction as well as established the fact that people who suffer from IBS are twice as likely to have asthmatic symptoms as well.

Dr Benjamin Marsland, of the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, said: 'Over recent decades, the incidence of allergic asthma has increased in developing countries, while the consumption of dietary fibre has decreased in these countries.'

His team found that a low fibre diet made lung more vulnerable to inflammation from dust mites whereas those whose ate pectin rich food had reduced allergic airway disease.
