PM Modi’s reshuffle of cabinet was due for months now, mostly due to vacancies and shifting alliances. Nine new ministers took oath on Sunday, this is the third reshuffle from the time he took charge. PM met the new ministers before ceremony and told them to perform well and “do a good job”.

Six Ministers resigned to make way for new ministers, sources say that they are sacked based on their performances as PM looks for efficiency ahead of the 2019 National elections when he will seek a second term.

Four Ministers- Piyush Goyal, Nirmala Sitharaman, Dharmendra Pradhan, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi were elevated to cabinet level. PM has selected new members based on 4P’S Passion, Proficiency, Professional and Political acumen, to deliver on his vision of “A New India”.

Nirmala Sitharaman is the one most benefited from this reshuffle. She is the new Defense Minister and second female Minister for Defense after Indira Gandhi. Amit Shah who was earlier handling both Finance and Defense, left the latter for Nirmala.

She was earlier minister of state for the commerce and industry minister of the country and first independent women to hold the charge of the important portfolio. She took charge at a time when world order is changing at a Swift pace, with tensions in the neighbor hood and the Indian ocean.
